Heavy Fuel Oil on the Agenda at Arctic Circle 2019

The Clean Arctic Alliance will be at Arctic Circle in Reykjavík, Iceland on October 10-12, 2019. We’re involved in running two events involving the risks of heavy fuel oil in the Arctic – one outside of Arctic Circle, and one session on the program. Read on!

Seminar: Banning the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by ships in the Arctic – a first step to addressing the climate crisis

Organised by: Iceland Nature Conservation Association & the Clean Arctic Alliance

On: 9th October, 17.00 – 18.30, Verold – The House of Vigdis University of Iceland

A small panel of experts will speak on the climate crisis and living on the frontline of a changing Arctic. The panellists will consider the impact of current practices and fuel choices, particularly the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by Arctic shipping in Icelandic and Arctic waters, and how a ban on HFO use and carriage in the Arctic can contribute to addressing the climate crisis. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Breakout Session: A Vision for Shipping in the Arctic

The session “A Vision for Shipping in the Arctic” will focus on the changing Arctic and facilitate debate on the need for a change in the current practices and fuel choices of Arctic shipping.  It will explore international regulatory requirements and alternative fuels and forms of propulsion to contribute to meeting the climate crisis challenge. A panel of speakers, who are at the forefront of climate change in the Arctic, international shipping policy, and the development of cleaner, more sustainable shipping fuels and alternative forms of ship propulsion, will set the scene and there will be opportunity for questions and discussion.
